The Day Before Christmas…and all through the house

Twas the day Before Christmas When all through the house
Not a quilter was working She was sitting on the couch

The stockings weren’t hung By the chimney with care
Because due to the remodel The mantle just wasn’t there

The dog was nestled All safe on her mat
Having visions of catching That darned neighborhood cat

And me in my pj’s And Neil tired from the day,
Had just settled down To be lazy, OK?

When out on the gravel There arose such a clatter
I got up slowly from my chair To see what was the matter

Away to the window I trudged oh so fast
And Willow behind me It was a furry mad dash

The moon on the ground Of the new fallen frost
Gave the lustre of midday We had to see at all cost

When what To my wandering eyes Should appear
But a miniature sleigh And eight Malamute pups with no fear

And out of the darkness No fanfare just – poof!
I knew in a moment It must be St. Woof

More rapid than doggie breakfast His commands as they came
As he “Gee’d” and he “haw’d” And called them by name

Now Dasher, Now Drover, Now Paxson, Now Vader
On Comet, On Chiclet, On Dusty, on Blazer
To the top of the driveway, To the top the house
Now mush-away, mush-away, mush-away all

As dry leaves before the wild Because no one did rake
When they meet with an obstacle Mount to the sky, easy as cake

So up to the rooftop The Mals they did fly
With a sleigh full of dog toys And St. Woofalis let out a sigh

And then in a twinkling I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing And several big “WOOFS!”

As I drew in my head And was turning around
Down the chimney St. Woofalis Came with a bound

He was dressed all in fur From his head to his foot
And his clothes were all tarnished With dog slime and soot

A bundle of toys he had flung On his back
And he looked Like a musher just opening his pack

His eyes How they twinkled His dimples how merry
His cheeks Were like roses His nose like a cherry

His drawl little mouth Was drawn up like a bow
And the beard of his chin Was a white as the snow

The grip of his bag He held tight in his fist
Because he knew if it opened Dog bones would disappear like the mist

He had a broad face and boy could he yell
Something you must do, with eight Mals that can tell

He was chubby and plump A right jolly old elf
He hadn’t been training; And neither had I, I admitted to myself

A wink of his eye And a twist of his head
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread

He spoke not a word But went straight To his work
Not finding the stockings He filled our candy bowl then turned with a jerk

An laying a finger Along side his nose
An giving a nod Up the chimney He rose

He sprang To his sleigh To his team Gave a “MUSH!”
An away They all ran Missing the fireplace, only just

But I heard him exclaim As he flew out of sight
Happy Christmas to all And to all a goodnight!!

Merry Christmas to all! Enjoy your day!!

  1. And now you’re a published author! What will you think of next? Very entertaining! I’d love to see the 8 puppies, the image in my head of one big fur-blur!

    1. Fur-blur! I love that! I’m going to add that to my arsenal for next year. It certainly would be a fur-blur. I hope you and your family had a great holiday! See you soon!!
