I’m so excited to announce that one of my quilts is in the March/April 2013 issue of McCall’s Quilting! And it’s on the cover! Although I’ve been quilting for over twenty years, and longarming for four years, I’ve only recently been submitting quilts to magazines, and this is the first one that got picked up, so I’m very excited about it.
This is a lap-sized quilt with lots of Kaufman solids and Rowan Fabrics (think Kaffe Fasset) so it’s really colorful and bright….and of course happy! I named it “Garden Gradation” because of the floral prints and the color gradation in the sashing strips. I usually make everything scrappy, so left to my own devices I would have made the sashing blocks scrappy, but because I was planning to make this quilt as a pattern for sale, my friend and mentor, Sheila Sinclair Snyder, encouraged me to make it simple as possible. She suggested I use a repeating flavor of colors. And so I thought I’d try to make it “simple” …and I liked it! She also came down to the quilt shop to help me decide on binding, which as you can see turned out really fun. Neither Sheila nor I are one for calmness in our color palette selection! I really can’t say thank you enough to Sheila for inspiring me both in my longarm journey and in my sewing. Thank you Sheila!
If you collect fabric (like I do) you can easily pull from your stash and come up with something similar to Garden Gradation.. But if you want your quilt to look pretty close to this one (and you don’t feel like shopping – what?), then you can purchase the kit from McCall’s.
Of course there are lots of fabulous quilts in the magazine, so run, don’t walk, to your nearest quilting shop that sells McCall’s Quilting, or order a subscription online. I think in the Eugene/Springfield area you can find them at both locations for JoAnn’s Fabrics.
Oh, and the quilting on the quilt is pretty fun too. You can’t really see it in the photo, but I’ll just have to pull out my own photos that I took before sending the quilt off and post those…..soon….so stay tuned!
Happy Quilting!
Congratulations! Your beautiful work deserves recognition!

This may be a repeat, but congratulations! I love the controlled scrappiness. We might have to celebrate with a margarita….

Thank you! I think it’s more like my 5 minutes (or 3 1/2 minutes) of fame…..but that’s OK. It is a fun process! But don’t worry, I’m the same old me! The only thing that can change me is a WHOLE bunch of coffee! I hope you are doing well!!!
